Notes: For any replacement dwelling or addition to an existing dwelling, if the system cannot be located during the onsite inspection, a replacement septic system is required. Dwellings served by privies may have any number of additions without the issue of a new SAN or inspection unless the site soils are suspect.
Reason for Issue of Land Use Permit System/Report Information Required Action
New dwelling Sanitary Permit (SAN) on file and or Certified Soil Tester/Certified Soil Test (CST) Issue SAN and or CST
Replacement dwelling Soil and Site Evaluation Report (SSER) and/or SAN on file Issue SAN for reconnection to existing septic system
Replacement dwelling No SSER and/or SAN on file or suspect soils SSER Existing system inspected for size and condition by a Master Plumber (MP), Master Plumber Restricted Service (MPRS), Septic Pumper (SP) or Privately Owned Wastewater Treatment System Inspector (POWTS)
CST perform one boring for soil evaluation
Issue SAN for reconnection if inspection results are okay
Relocation of a dwelling SSER and/or SAN on file Issue SAN for reconnection to existing septic system
Relocation of dwelling No SSER and/or SAN on file or suspect soils SSER Existing system inspected for size and condition by a MP, MPRS, SP or POWTS
CST perform one boring for soil evaluation
Sanitarian to review
Issue SAN for reconnection
1 bedroom addition to an existing dwelling SAN on file Sanitarian to review existing SAN and CST
Complete Flows and Loads (FL)
1 bedroom addition to an existing dwelling No SSER and/or SAN on file or suspect soils/SSER Existing system inspected for size and condition by a MP, MPRS, SP or POWTS
CST perform one boring for soil evaluation
If 1 and 2 above are bad, replace system
If 1 and 2 above are okay, complete FL
More than 1 bedroom addition to an existing dwelling SSER and/or SAN on file, or no SSER or SAN on file Add to existing septic system to meet code requirements
Install a new septic system per code requirements
